TheLegalCalc was founded and built by Adriano Lourenço Filho, a registered business administrator (CRA-ES No. 31269, Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil) with a background in financial analysis and business management.

The same systematic approach used in financial modeling — identifying variables, sourcing primary data, and building transparent calculation frameworks — drives every tool on this site. We translate state statutes into accessible estimation tools so people can understand their financial situation before consulting an attorney.

What We Do — and What We Don't

TheLegalCalc is a legal information and estimation platform. We research U.S. state statutes, translate them into accessible calculator tools, and explain the formulas in plain English.

We are not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice. We do not represent clients. Our tools are designed for planning and education — to help you understand your situation before you consult an attorney, file a motion, or negotiate a settlement.

Every page on this site carries a clear disclaimer for this reason. Legal decisions have real consequences. Our job is to give you a reliable starting point, not a final answer.

How We Research Every Calculator

Primary sources only

Every formula starts with the actual statute or court rule — not a legal blog, not a secondary summary. We cite the exact code section on every page so you can verify the source yourself.

State by state

U.S. law varies dramatically by state. We research each state independently using official legislature websites, court publications, and agency guidance documents. California and Texas child support, for example, use fundamentally different models — and we treat them that way.

Updated when law changes

State laws change. When a legislature updates its guidelines — like California's SB 343 in 2024, which overhauled the child support K-factor formula — we update the calculator and document what changed and when.

Transparent limitations

When a calculation requires a simplification or a national model in place of a state-specific worksheet, we say so on the page. Our tools are planning estimates. We do not overstate their precision.

Why We Built This

The U.S. legal tools market has a real gap at the intersection of accessibility and accuracy. Most free tools are generic. Most accurate tools are paid or require an attorney. Most explanations assume legal literacy that most people don't have.

TheLegalCalc was built on a simple thesis: if you give people accurate information in plain language, with the sources visible and the limitations clear, they make better decisions — and they arrive at attorney consultations better prepared.

We are an independent platform. We have no affiliation with any law firm, legal services company, or government agency. We are supported by advertising. Our editorial conclusions are not influenced by advertising relationships.

Contact & Transparency

If you find an error in our legal interpretation or a formula that no longer reflects your state's current guidelines, we want to know.

Email: contact@thelegalcalc.com

Calculators and articles are reviewed when state law changes and at least annually. Confirmed errors are corrected within 2 business days of being reported.

When a significant error is found and corrected, we update the "Last reviewed" date on the affected page.

We do not accept paid placements, sponsored content, or affiliate arrangements that influence our calculator formulas or editorial conclusions.
